Band Saw 2

29 December 2013:
Another attempt at an image of the band saw. This time with a tripod, and processing a set of varying exposure images as an HDR image with no overlay.

Band Saw

28 December 2013:
I keep trying to take pictures of different things in the garage, so far without much success. This time I experimented with an overlay. The original image of the saw blade and guide is blurry to begin with - I should have used a tripod, but didn't. I took a second close-up picture of the mottled case on the band saw and used that as an overlay. This technique has promise, but maybe not so much with this image. Keep experimenting…

Catalina Island

24 December 2013:

The air temperature made it up into the high 70's today, and we took advantage and went for a short hike on Palos Verdes this afternoon. We started hiking at the top of the Portuguese Bend nature reserve. I had never been there before, which is a bit hard to believe given how long I have been in Southern California. It was a great spot, with nice views of the Pacific and Catalina Island in the distance. We made it down to the shade under this stand of trees, and then hiked back out.

We had some great clouds roll through in the late afternoon today. We do not get these very often, so they are fun to shoot.

Lily built this floral arrangement for a Christmas pot luck at the Hermosa Beach Senior Citizen group. It will be held this coming Tuesday.

Ginkgo

26 October 2013:

We walked through the Japanese Garden in a park in Portland. There were many many photographers out and about taking pictures of the fall foliage. This Ginkgo (at least, that is what I think it was) was absolutely gorgeous.

Lily walking in Portland

25 October 2013:
Lily, Tony, Rika and I walked about one mile from our Portland B&B to Powell's books. Many trees on the way were losing their leaves. I accidentally used an unintended lens setting on Hipstamatic, for this image of Lily but like the results.

Cape Kiwanda

24 October 2013:

One of our stops today was a hike on and around nearby Cape Kiwanda. This place looks like I think the Oregon Coast should look. It was a cloudy day, but the Cape was a great place to spend some time.

Beach walk, Pacific City

23 October 2013:

We drove down from Seaview, Washington to Pacific City, Oregon today. The sky was overcast all day long with on and off light mist. After we arrived in Pacific City we went for a stroll on the beach. Here Rika, Tony and Lily are dressed for the weather.

Razor Clams

20 October 2013:

We are in Seaview, Washington tonight. Seaview is right on the Pacific, just north of Astoria, Oregon. The locals were out searching rather successfully for razor clams in the sand. There was a very low tide tonight, and that is when you go out and dig for them. The top image is Lily going out for a look, and the bottom image is the clam diggers. Rika gets credit for the setup for the bottom image - she took some very similar shots, and I borrowed the idea.

Leaves, evening walk

19 October 2013:

Lily and I went for a late afternoon walk from Rika's apartment down into Magnuson Park alongside Lake Washington. Leaves are turning, and the air was quite cool. There was a very heavy overcast sky, and this was taken just at sunset, so the light level was low but very soft. I like the result.

Successful Defense!

18 October 2013:

Rika successfully defended her doctoral dissertation yesterday. Following tradition in the Oceanography department, the successful candidate goes up to the third floor kitchen / dining area in the Marine Sciences building and pops the cork on a bottle of champagne, thereby putting a dent in a ceiling tile. The candidate then initials next to their mark. Rika managed to put a new dent for her doctoral dissertation right next to the dent from her masters dissertation!

Santa Monica Pier

7 September 2013:

I went north to the Santa Monica pier this evening in search of more material for this year's photo project. While there, I caught the sunset with a more 'traditional' photo. The clouds were quite nice. The pier was absolutely packed with people enjoying the evening.

Taken during a break in our walk through the Hermosa Fiesta this afternoon. Today's posting of ocean conditions at lifeguard headquarters said the water temperature was 70 deg F. Warm for here.

Labor Day Weekend Sunset

31 August 2013
I was down at the beach at sunset at the end of a very warm day, working on the photo project for this year. This image will probably not make it into the project because it is not in an impressionistic style, but I thought it told a nice story.

Post-sunset Pier

25 July 2013:

Taken yesterday evening, this image fits the recent mood of our cool, cloudy weather. If any of you are too hot back in the midwest, come on out!

Pin hole 'lens' (Lens Baby), 67 second exposure, ISO 400, 10 minutes after the sun set behind heavy clouds. I am amazed at the amount of detail you can see with the pin hole lens. Maybe I will post another one of these tomorrow.

Women, category 1 & 2 racing. I wish I knew who this was in the red, white and blue jersey. I should try to find out. The green jersey behind makes for a nice contrast. There were some really fast cyclists out there today, and I hope this image conveys some of this speed and skill.

Sunset from 29 June

I did not take any pictures today on our drive home, but I will this one taken on the 29th from the Minaret Vista area. This cloud formation dissipated soon after this shot. The hordes of mosquitoes did not dissipate, unfortunately.

Lily hiking above Lake George

30 June 2013:
This is a another image from yesterday. Shortly after climbing up this path above Lake George and headed for Barret Lake, my right hiking boot sole parted from the rest of the shoe, and we had to turn around and head back down. As you can see, Lily was enjoying the afternoon.

Selfie #3

30 June 2013:
Tired of my Selfies yet? Today's was taken at Starkweather Lake, which is a really nice alpine lake on the road to Devil's Postpile. It was a great ride up and over Minaret Summit down to the Devil's Postpile and Red's Meadow area, and then back again. The grade back up to the summit is hard. I got in 990 m of climbing over the 2.5 hour ride. The 'new' bike is sure nice to ride.

Lily hiking above Emerald Lake

28 June 2013 #2
This afternoon we hiked up Coldwater Creek, from Lake Mary past Emerald Lake (in the background) and then up to Gentian Meadows. We had a full adventure: hiking at altitude, a gazillion mosquitoes, beautiful scenery, thunder, light rain (right after this photo), and some broken camera gear. It was great!

Off to Mammoth Lakes

27 June 2013:

Departure, late morning:

Lunch in Mojave (it was pretty good!).

After lunch, the air temp was 104 F all the way up the Owens valley. The mini was struggling a bit to make power at that elevation and at those temperatures. I finally turned off the AC on the Sherman Grade between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes (5000 feet to 7000 feet in less than 10 miles), put the Mini in 3rd gear at 5000 rpm, and it felt much better. That was fun! LA to Mammoth on one tank of gas.

Sunset at Minaret Vista near the main ski lodge at Mammoth, elevation about 9200 feet. Quite a show.
