I finally pulled the Canon 5D out of its travel bag today and took it for a walk. It has not been out since the trip to the Northwest. 

Lily likes these flowers for arrangements, so I took a portrait of this one using the Lensbaby composer. We were on the way to dinner.

San Diego Trip #2

20 July 2012: This is the approach to the climb up Torrey Pines hill. The top of the climb marks the traditional end of the ride. The top, in the distance, is about 113 miles from the start in Hermosa Beach. It was a beautiful day for a ride.

Before we departed Vancouver early this afternoon, Lisa took us to La Taqueria restaurant near her office for some excellent tacos. While waiting for our order, I took advantage of a mirror behind the booth to capture this stunning family portrait.

Triathlon Finishers

Rika and Molly at the finish line after 6 to 7 hours of racing. They could still smile. The weather was excellent, perhaps even a bit too warm.

Lensbaby meets Butchart Gardens

6 July 2012:

Butchart Gardens is one of Lily's favorite destinations. It is a set of very well kept gardens grown inside an old limestone quarry on Vancouver Island. This is our second visit, Rika's first. To make things interesting for myself, I put the Lensbaby single optic lens on the Canon and had a lot of fun. There were cameras everywhere, as you can imagine, including some people taking pictures with their iPads. I think I may have been the only lensbaby user.

Cattle Point

5 July 2012:

Rika and Lily look out over the Juan de Fuca strait from Cattle Point, Victoria, BC. The snow-capped Olympic Mountains of Washington state are in the distance.

While there, I wandered around with the camera and worked on some more beach abstracts. This one I left in color. The rust-colored lichen did not work well in black and white.

July 4th Ferry Ride

4 July 2012:

We had two ferry rides today to get from Orcas Island to Sydney on Vancouver Island. We transferred ferries in Friday Harbor. This is Rika standing on a forward observation point enjoying the view on the ride from Friday Harbor to Sydney. We were in the U.S. for Canada Day, and we were in Canada for July 4th!

Obstruction Pass 3

3 July 2012:
I spent some time working this scene. This was a single exposure taken from the front porch of the cabin with a wide angle lens setting. This was taken at 9:30 pm after local sunset, as we were packing up. We departed early the next morning.

3 July 2012:
We woke up in the morning to steady rain. This is the view from the front porch of the cabin, with fishermen scattered about in the pass. One end of Orcas Island is on the left, and a piece of Obstruction Island is on the right. This image was taken as a series of 3 exposures at 7:15 am, stitched together in a panorama.

The view from the cabin on Orcas Island. That is Obstruction Island outside the window, across from Obstruction Pass. We had sprinkles on and off through the day, steady rain tonight.
