On the trainer again

This is getting to be a short series. Could not get in a bike commute on Wednesday, so it was back on the trainer. This was a fun one to do, without help from Lily. Note the iPod player in the background and the Litespeed hanging from the hooks. It was not exactly cold outside, for those of you in the midwest.

Cormorants, Leo Carrillo State Beach

19 February 2012:

I drove out to Leo Carrillo state beach on Sunday morning. This beach is close to the LA county, Ventura county border. It was supposed to be gloomy with drizzle, but instead it was bright and sunny. I was in search of beach abstracts, of which I may have found one. I also took a few seascapes, and this one suddenly worked as a black and white. You birders out there can let me know if I got this right, but I think these are cormorants perched high up in the sun.

Bike Maintenance

18 February 2012:

The ride through the sand storm Monday night finally convinced me it was time to clean the drive train. Yuck. Many months worth of sand and chain lube had accumulated on various bits of the bike. Note the nice clean hands.

Rear View

14 February 2012:
A series of weak but very windy cold fronts is moving through the area, one went through Monday and the second is forecast for Wednesday. The bike path is now covered with sand. So, instead of commuting, it is back to the garage until we get the path plowed and swept.

An urban space

12 February 2012:

The city renovated upper Pier avenue over the past few years. On a walk tonight down to the pier and back, this new bench and the light  around it caught my eye. I am experimenting with the high iso settings on the new camera. The combination of a high iso (high sensitivity) chip, image stabilizing technology in the lens, and powerful noise reduction software in a photoshop plug-in lets you almost get away with taking this as a hand held image.

Paddler's cove, late afternoon

11 February 2012:
We had a weak cold front move through the area earlier today. Lily and I were in Palos Verdes to see an art exhibition at the Malaga Cove Library, and afterwards we drove out to the cliffs to see what we could see. We found a hard bright sun and a windy beach below the cliffs.

Self Portrait

10 February 2012:
Taken for the February advanced photography class. The self portrait is an annual requirement and tradition in this class. Consider this one as a work in progress. It needs to be retaken.

Some of you may recall that the previous owner of this excellent camera composed some very similar scenes. I have to say, this was a fun one.

Gulls

5 February 2012:
We have had large groups of gulls hanging around the beach for the past week or so. They must be migrating through the area. We were walking on the Hermosa Beach strand just before sunset, and a group of kids scared up a big flock that had been sitting on the sand.
